Procedures for Early Entrance to Kindergarten: September Birthdays
By ruling of the Board of Education, children are eligible to enroll in Kindergarten if they are five years old on or before September first for the upcoming school year. Spring Lake Park Schools recognizes that some students may be ready for Kindergarten with birthdays September first through the thirtieth. Therefore, on May 1, 2012  at 4:45 p.m., Kindergarten teachers and K-3 principals will  host an "Early Entrance Kindergarten Ready Opportunity" for students to demonstrate they are ready to start Kindergarten early. During the experience, students rotate through stations used to assess different skills as well as participating in large group activities.

Procedures:

  1. The Parent/Guardian should contact Tracy Potratz at 763-754-9700 or email mcalla@district16.org, and complete and return the application form and ratings scale (located at the bottom of this page) by
    April 15, 2012.
  2. Spring Lake Park Schools will contact the parent/guardian with information regarding the “Early Entrance Kindergarten Ready Opportunity”to be held at Northpoint Elementary on May 1, 2012.
  3. Parents/Guardians with students participating in the assessment will need to bring a check at this time for $100.00 made payable to ISD 16 to cover the cost of assessment and consultation time.
  4. A K-3 building principal will inform the parent of the results of the assessment.
Procedures for Accelerated Entrance to Kindergarten: Non-September Birthdays
By ruling of the Board of Education, children are eligible to enroll in kindergarten if they are five years old on or before September first. Spring Lake Park Schools District 16 recognizes that chronological age alone does not always indicate the academic needs of a child. District 16 views Early Entrance to Kindergarten as a form of acceleration. Below are the requirements and procedures that we follow in making a decision to accelerate a student a year early.

Requirements:

  1. An intelligence test (e.g. the Weschler Preschool & Primary Scale of Intelligence, Standard-Binet Intelligence Scale, or the Kaufman Assessment Battery for Children - 2nd Ed.) score of at least 130.
  2. The emotional, social, and physical traits must be evaluated in terms of the total child.
Procedures:
  1. Parents/Guardians must contact Gifted Services or the elementary principal by May 1 and return all necessary paperwork by May 10.
  2. The parent completes an application form and ratings scale (located at the bottom of this page.) Upon the return of the paperwork the outcomes of this screening are:
    1. The criteria have been met to indicate further screening.
    2. The screening procedure is complete at this point.

  1. If further screening is indicated, an appointment with the parent(s) and the child is scheduled.  At this appointment a school psychologist will converse with the parent and child, and then administer assessments to determine eligibility. A fee of $300.00 is collected at this time to cover assessment and consultation time.  A birth certificate also needs to be presented for age verification.
  2. The psychologist’s report is forwarded to the elementary principal and gifted coordinator in which they will discuss the results.
  3. The elementary principal or a designee provides a decision to the parents. This decision must be accepted as final.
