Basic Skills/Title I

What is Basic Skills/Title I?
Each of Spring Lake Park Elementary Schools has developed a System of Interventions. This system has been created to effectively and systematically intervene to ensure that each student learns. Basic Skills/Title I programming is a supplemental academic intervention that is used to help students become proficient in the areas of reading and math.

What kind of instructional support is provided?
Basic Skills/Title I teachers and paraprofessionals work closely with classroom teachers to strategically plan the learning experiences for students so there is a consistent correlation between the strategies used in the classroom and the interventions and strategies used by support teachers. A variety of methods and materials are used to help students as they accelerate their learning in their areas of difficulty.

Do Basic Skills/Title I students miss regular reading and math instruction?
No, they do not miss regular reading and math instruction. Basic Skills support is in addition to the instruction of the classroom teacher.

How long is a student in the program?
These skills based groups are "fluid". There is no set period of time that the student participates. It depends on the student's rate of progress. When a student is proficient and can perform independently at his/her grade level then the Basic Skills/Title I service will no longer be provided.

How are parents informed about their child's progress?
Parents are informed by attending conferences which are scheduled throughout the year. They are also informed by Emails, phone calls, and parent meetings.

How can parents participate in Basic Skills/Title I?
Parents can do the following:
  • Give helpful information about their child to the teacher (s).
  • Attend parent/teacher conferences and follow up on the suggestions made
  • Read to/with their child everyday
  • Attend school activities which promote learning (Family Fun Nights)
  • Participate in the parent/school compact
